About the Job
Responsibilities:
Primarily responsible for scheduling ophthalmic surgeries at surgery centers. Also serves as liaison between patient and surgeon, facility, pre-op staff, etc. Position requires good understanding of ophthalmic practice and insurance coverage, considerable attention to detail, ability to communicate with patients, surgeons, coworkers and supervisors and a willingness to help in all areas.

Duties:
  • Conducts patient interviews to accurately document a patient’s pre-operative status and makes necessary arrangements to qualify patients for eye surgery.
  • Coordinates all pre-operative tests and surgical procedures.
  • Informs patients of necessary pre-operative guidelines.
  • Holds pre-operative discussion with patient on lens options and financial options available to patient.
  • Coordinates scheduling of surgeries with the surgical site and physician while facilitating surgical dates with patients, relatives, and/or other support systems.
  • Collects all pre-operative patient information and verify with the patient’s primary care physician to clear patient for surgery.
  • Forward and/or provide patient information packets and promptly respond to any questions prior to and after surgery.
  • Responsible for surgical referral and authorization verification prior to surgery and post-operative appointment.
  • Gathers all pre-operative patient information, prepares and produces a complete pre-operative package ensuring that the patient’s chart is complete with signed consent forms, testing, etc. and verifies patient is cleared for surgery.
  • Maintains a detailed patient surgical log, surgery time and other relevant information.
  • Maintains constant communication with physician and manager which includes reporting any problems or challenges in the day-to-day operations.
  • Works with Biller to obtain appropriate billing and reimbursement for surgical procedures scheduled outside of office in addition to office procedures performed in-house. Makes written and/or verbal inquiries to third party payers to verify insurance status and precertification status and to follow-up on denials. Report problems to Manager.
  • Responsible for maintaining surgical package supplies as necessary and coordinating the distribution of these.

Qualifications:
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to gather and maintain accurate records and patient charts.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills when dealing with and interacting with the patient, relatives, physicians, and staff.
  • Able to show initiative and durability when working under stress due to deadlines and volume of work.
  • Excellent working knowledge of computer EMR and other computer applications.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Requirements:
  • Completion of Ophthalmic Technician training or 2 year community college program with national certification.
  • 2-4 years of related experience. High school or equivalent.
  • Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within field of ophthalmology.
  • Relies on limited experience and judgement to plan and accomplish goals.
  • Perform a variety of tasks.
  • Highly energetic with positive attitude.
  • Be well organized, team player with great attention to detail.
  • Ability to lead and guide technician staff.
  • Demonstrate exemplary customer service and interpersonal skills with every interaction.
  • EHR experience.
  • Exceptional interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong knowledge of diagnostic ophthalmic equipment.
  • Reports to Manager.
